We can't avoid the Trump building but I like this image of Trump disappearing into the fog. My favourite slogan seen on socks is Dump Trump.
Our plan was to walk Chicago's Magnificent Mile, thinking that would involve about a 3km round trip. By the time we explored stores and side streets we had clocked up 9kms. The north-south mile starts from the northbank of the Chicago River and ends at Lake Shore Drive. We continued on a short way walking through a park and a pedestrian underpass to Oak Street Beach.
During the massive Chicago fire virtually all of the buildings were destroyed along what is now known as the Magnificent Mile. The red patch on this old map shows the area where the fire destroyed 17,000 buildings.
One building to have survived the fire is the
Chicago Water Tower. A German immigrant fire fighter covered the building with woolen blankets and old canvas sails that he kept dampened. The fog limited the clarity of our photos so I downloaded this one from the Chicago Architecture Center. The overly ornate tower was constructed to hide a standpipe.
Our final stop was at the enormous Uniqlo store which covers several floors. Entry to the store is via this very tall escalator. I found an elevator to go down with our purchases as I am not keen on such tall escalators.
