The Renwick Gallery is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The building was originally designed as a gallery, but was used by the military during the civil war. It eventually opened as a gallery in 1874 but by 1899 it was being used as a court building. Demolition was threatened in 1963 but this was averted by Jaqueline Kennedy. In 1965 President Johnson transferred the building to the Smithsonian Institution.
The Michael Sherrill exhibition was our favourite. He started "making teapots" according to the information officer, but got bored with this and started making the most amazing ceramic and stainless steel flower structures.
Sherrill's flowers are very clever, but the two metallic finished stoneware teapots are superb.
