We have been awake since 2.30am NY time! Once it was daylight we went exploring, walking to the Chelsea Market for coffee and breakfast. This historic building covers the block bounded by 9th and 10th Avenues and 15th and 16th Streets. It used to be the home of Nabisco, the National Biscuit Company and is where Oreos were first made. Some of the original industrial infrastructure is still in place and adds to the character of the building.
Fortified by caffeine we walked to the Hudson River where extensive developments are transforming a large area of Manhattan into Hudson River Park. The huge concrete structure which looks like champagne glasses will become an island park, as portrayed in the photo I found on the NY Times website.
This development is funded by the multi billionaire Barry Diller who made his fortune from Fox and sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com. The structure has been nicknamed Diller Island. He also made a significant donation to help develop the Highline, a disused rail line that is now an attractive linear park and one of the most popular places in New York.
