Day 5 - Shopping in New York

We were first tempted to shop while at the Met, as evidenced by our new socks. Today we spent all day shopping - in Macy's, Nordstrom, REI and several boutiques around Soho and the Bowery.

On our way to Macy's we discovered more than a dozen shops in W 28th St between 6th and 7th that sell flowers, greenery and other materials for the garden. In some places plants cover the sidewalk leaving only a narrow path for pedestrians and all of the people making deliveries with their trolleys.

There is this wonderful mural on the corner of Bleeker and Bowery Streets in Noho (referring to the area North of Houston St) - I love this combination of colours. There are several large murals in the area.

Soho is famous for its cast iron architecture built from about 1840 to 1900 ( yes this means the area South of Houston). In those days iron was cheaper than bricks or masonary. A four storey building could be built in as many months. One of my favourite cast iron buildings is at 1 Astor Place on the corner of Broadway. The cast iron holding up the structure still features in the store frontage. The red brick and terracotta facade make this building standout from its neighbours.
